Set the flint up properly the take the firearm to into a dark room no light. With no powder in the gun Trigger the action while observing for sparks. Assuming the flint is being held tightly so it doesn't move when it strikes the frizzen. If no sparks fly the frizzen is bad and would need replacing.They shoot most accuretly if the clearance is .003 or less. That's a pretty snug fit and can be pretty hard to load in a fouled bore. A patched .570 diameter roundball with an 80 grain load of GOEX 2Fg had a breech pressure of 5,200 psi and a muzzle velocity of 1288. The barrels are held onto the frame by a knurled bolt (?) that uses an allen wrench.The wad serves three purposes. 1) Protects the base of the conical from powder flash which can melt or otherwise deform the base of the conical. This can result in increased leading and reduced accuracy if the base of the conical is melted or deformed. 2) Increased gas-check/sealing.The striped pillow ticking (0.015) or mattress ticking (0.018) is easiest to find. Some like the extra thickness in denim (0.020) patching or canvas (0.022). Some like the finer and denser weave of the drill cloth / utility cloth (0.017) from JoAnn's Fabrics. American Rev war packs were often haversack style with two straps. The 'New Pattern' was the same with a strap that went over both deltoids and cross body. But, either paper patched bullets in shallow grooves must be used, nor a good base wad to seal the gases behind the bullet needs to be used so that you can get the velocity needed to stabilize these longer bullets in flight.I am in the process of finding the most accurate hunting bullet for my 1:38 twist 58 cal carbine In the line up are 580 grain Maxi-ball, 560 grain Maxi-hunter, 440 grain REAL as well as some oversized minie ball 500 grain.
